Common eye conditions and how we help you see better
Below are some of the most common eye conditions, what they involve and how we at Optikhuset Stockholm can help. With the right examinations, we can detect early signs and guide you onwards with confidence when needed.
What is cataract?
Cataract means that the eye’s natural lens gradually becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision, particularly in bright or backlit conditions such as driving. It most often develops with age, but can also occur in younger individuals due to genetics or conditions such as diabetes.
How we can help:
- We can detect signs of cataract during a standard eye examination
- We explain the changes and inform you about treatment options
- If needed, we refer you to an ophthalmologist for surgery
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition that damages the optic nerve and often develops without clear symptoms. The most common form is chronic and progresses gradually without noticeable signs. Acute glaucoma, however, can cause sudden pain and vision loss.
How we can help:
- We measure intraocular pressure and carry out visual field tests
- We use OCT to detect changes in the optic nerve head (the optic disc)
- We identify risk factors and refer you promptly if glaucoma is suspected
What is age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
AMD affects the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. The dry form leads to a gradual decline, while the wet form can cause rapid vision loss. Risk factors include smoking, poor diet, sun exposure, genetics, age and certain newer medications.
How we can help:
- We examine the macula using OCT for early detection
- We explain symptoms such as distorted lines or grey patches in your vision
- We recommend supplements when appropriate and refer promptly in cases of wet AMD
What is corneal inflammation (keratitis)?
Keratitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi, and sometimes affects contact lens wearers. Symptoms include pain, light sensitivity and reduced vision. It requires prompt diagnosis to avoid lasting damage.
How we can help:
- We examine the eye carefully when symptoms occur
- We assess whether it is an acute infection requiring urgent care
- We guide you on appropriate eye drops and refer you to an ophthalmologist when needed
What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is a common and usually harmless eye inflammation that can be caused by viruses, bacteria or allergies. It often leads to red, itchy eyes and can be contagious.
How we can help:
- We identify the cause and advise on relief
- We help you choose the right type of eye drops
- We provide guidance on hygiene to prevent the spread of infection
What is retinal detachment?
Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition that can cause flashes of light, shadows or a curtain-like loss of vision. It requires immediate treatment to preserve sight.
How we can help:
- We carry out urgent assessments when symptoms occur
- We examine the retina and check its attachment
- We refer you immediately if detachment is suspected
What is posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)?
Common with increasing age, this condition can cause visual disturbances such as floating spots or “floaters”. It is often harmless, but in some cases may precede retinal detachment.
How we can help:
- We distinguish between harmless vitreous detachment and more serious conditions
- We monitor any changes over time
In these symptoms and conditions, an advanced optician can make a significant difference.
What a customer say
Per is one of only a few active specialists in Sweden in binocular vision issues such as latent strabismus, something larger optician chains do not seem to assess at all. A big thank you to everyone at Optikhuset for their expert help in understanding what both my daughter and I needed in terms of lenses and glasses.
Per, Marita and Louise are outstanding when it comes to service, care and friendliness. They truly go the extra mile to make you feel seen as a customer. An excellent range of high-quality eyewear throughout.

A thorough examination using advanced diagnostic technology
At Optikhuset, we use two key instruments:
OCT (optical coherence tomography): Provides a cross-sectional image of the retina, allowing us to detect conditions that are not visible in a standard examination.
Myah: Used to measure corneal shape and axial length, and to assess dry eye. Essential for myopia management, contact lens fitting and pre-surgical planning.

How to keep your eyes healthy for longer
– 4 simple tips
- Have regular eye examinations. Speak to your optician about how often you should check your eye health. This depends on factors such as family history, age, general health and any existing vision issues.
- Protect your eyes from the sun. UV light can damage the eye’s cells and accelerate ageing. Wear sunglasses with proper UV protection, and ideally lenses that also filter blue light.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Smoking, poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle can negatively affect your vision. Leafy greens such as kale and broccoli, as well as berries like blueberries, are beneficial for eye health.
- Avoid dry, irritated eyes. Use eye drops without harsh preservatives. Feel free to ask us for advice on what suits you best.
